Beijing is located on the west coast of Pacific, located at the northern tip of North China Plain. It is surrounded by the Yanshan Mountains on the west, north and east while the small alluvial plain of the Yongding River lies to its southeast. Beijing stands on this terrain and faces the Bohai Sea, which is also called the Beijing Bay. Beijing, China’s massive capital, has a history stretching back 3 millennia, yet it’s known as much for its modern architecture as its ancient sites such as the Grand Forbidden City complex, the imperial palace during the Ming and Qing dynasties. Nearby, is the massive Tiananmen Square pedestrian plaza which is the site of Mao Zedong’s mausoleum and the National Museum of China displaying a vast collection of cultural relics.

CLIMATE
Beijing weather in February is extremely cold with temperatures between 23F and 43F degrees, so gloves and warm clothes are recommended.  As there are, on average only 2 rainy days in Beijing in February chances for rain are low however there is a possible chance for snow. Average snowy days for February are 3, so make sure to prepare accordingly. In winter, you should be prepare with a heavy woolen sweater, a long wind coat or a down jacket. Generally, there will be several heavy snowfalls each winter, so it is always wise for you to have anti-skidding shoes. Beijing has a dry cold air in winter with cold fronts from Siberia coming down through the Mongolian plain bringing bitterly cold crisp winds and clear skies, South China is wet and cold.  Temperatures in Beijing in winter will average 14ºF for January.

CULTURE
Being one of the six ancient cities in China, Beijing has been the heart and soul of Chinese culture. One of the most popular cultural activities in Beijing is the Peking Opera which is a traditional Chinese theatre that has songs, dialogues, acrobats and more. The younger generation enjoy going out and Beijing has a vibrant nightlife which accommodates them. The food of Beijing is influenced by the culinary traditions from all parts of China with the Peking Duck the most famous dish which is also loved by tourists.  Beijing has numerous places of scenic and architectural beauty. The Great Wall of China being the main attraction, along with UNESCO World Heritage Sites which includes The Forbidden City, Summer Palace, Temple of Heaven, Ming Tombs, Grand Canal and Peking-man site at Zhoukoudian Anthropological Museum. Beijing was the location of a lot of important events in recent Chinese history, mainly the Tiananmen Square protests of 1989 and the 2008 Summer Olympics. 

GETTING AROUND
Most international flights will arrive at Beijing Capital International Airport. Other major international terminals in China are Shanghai and Guangzhou.  Beijing is the railway hub of the nation and a major station in the Far East, with trains to most provincial capitals and all the neighboring cities. There are a number of stations in Beijing; the Beijing Railway Station, Beijing West Railway Station, and Beijing South Railway Station are the most important.  The new Beijing-Zhangjiakou intercity railway will be built, starting from Beijing North Railway Station, and ending at Zhangjiakou South Railway Station. It will be built for speeds of up to 350 km/h (217 mph), and travel time from Beijing to Zhangjiakou is estimated to be around 50 minutes. 

Beijing Daxing International Airport, a new airport for Beijing and the surrounding region, is due to open by 2019. The airport will replace the Beijing Nanyuan Airport and operate together with the Beijing Capital International Airport.

On October 1st, 1969, the first subway line of this city was put into use, making it the first China city having subway. 22 subway lines (including one airport express line) have been in operation with a total mileage of 608 kilometers (378 miles) in the city. Due to the frequent traffic jams, especially during rush hours, subway is probably the most time-saving transportation in the city. Even some super stars in the city travel by subway if in a hurry. The Beijing Subway is expected to continue its expansion and is projected reach 1,000 kilometers (620 miles) in length by 2022.
